Assam CM Announces Historic Bills on Love Jihad, Polygamy, and Satras

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam Legislative Assembly will see the introduction of historic bills this year, addressing issues such as Love Jihad, polygamy, and the protection of Vaishnavite Satras.

Speaking to the media, Sarma said, “These proposals will be discussed in the House, and once the bills are enacted, we will inform the media accordingly.”

The announcement comes amid Sarma’s earlier remarks expressing concerns over the declining population balance between Hindus and Muslims in Assam. During the Independence Day celebrations, he had stated that indigenous communities have become defensive in 12–13 districts due to demographic changes.

Sarma cited the 2021 census data, claiming that the Muslim population rose to 41 per cent, while the Hindu population decreased to 57 per cent, with Christians and other communities comprising the remainder. “The future of Assam is not secure for us,” he said, highlighting the perceived demographic shift.

The proposed bills are expected to be discussed in the Assembly in the coming sessions, marking a significant legislative focus on social and cultural issues in the State.
