Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday addressed the media, offering clarity regarding the treatment and conditions of the accused in the ongoing Zubeen Garg case.
Speaking about their confinement, the Chief Minister said, “They are sleeping on the floor and have been wearing a single set of clothes for several days. Even their families have not been allowed to meet them.”
Dr Sarma emphasised that the government is adhering strictly to standard prison procedures, dismissing claims of preferential treatment. “If we had said they were sent to jail, some people would have started criticising, calling it a ‘5-star jail’ or an air-conditioned facility. A jail is a jail—it is not a resort,” he remarked.
He acknowledged growing public scrutiny over the case, adding, “Some people don’t want to believe the reality. Everyone is angry with me, claiming that justice has not been served.”
The Chief Minister reiterated that the state administration is ensuring compliance with all jail protocols and that the accused are being treated as per the law. His remarks come amid continued public and media attention on the high-profile case and its court proceedings.
