Assam CM Inaugurates State’s First Science City at Sonapur

Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday inaugurated Assam’s first Science City at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, stating that the facility will encourage scientific thinking and innovation among young people. Spread across 82 acres and developed at a cost of ₹300 crore, the project aims to promote science education and interactive learning in the state. The chief minister said the new centre includes major attractions such as Eureka and Space Odyssey, and noted that the facility is larger than the well-known Science City Kolkata.

Sarma said the Science City will inspire young minds and strengthen the culture of scientific exploration in Assam. He added that additional facilities, including a Science Innovation Centre and a Science Park, will be developed in the coming months to further expand the campus. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the project has been developed jointly by the Assam government and the National Council of Science Museums under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

On the same occasion, the chief minister also virtually inaugurated five district science centres at Amingaon, Majuli, Silchar, Kaliabor and Bongaigaon. These centres are equipped with science galleries, digital planetariums and auditoriums, aimed at making science more accessible to students and the public while nurturing the next generation of innovators in the state.
