Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday clarified that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged links between Assam Congress President and MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan will now have to complete its inquiry by September 10.
Addressing reporters, Sarma said, “We have not set a specific deadline for the SIT to submit its report. But now, the team must conclude its investigation by September 10. The report will be placed before the state Cabinet on September 11 or 12, and by September 15, we will decide whether to hand over the case to the NIA, CBI, or the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.”

The Chief Minister acknowledged the SIT’s limited mandate, especially its inability to retrieve call data older than two years. He hinted that a transfer to central agencies might become necessary, noting that the NIA has the capacity to access records dating back to 2010 or 2011.

Sarma asserted that once the SIT completes its probe, either he or the Chief Secretary will review the findings before recommending further action. He maintained that while “startling revelations” are expected, Congress has dismissed the allegations as “politically motivated.”
The probe has deepened political tensions in Assam, with BJP and Congress leaders continuing to exchange sharp accusations. Sarma also clarified that broader issues such as citizenship and alleged OIC connections remain under the purview of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
