Digboi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp political attack on the Gandhi family, accusing them of decades of neglect and cultural insensitivity towards the North East. At the same time, he underscored the BJP government’s welfare-oriented governance and its preparedness for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing a public meeting and later interacting with the media at Tingrai Stadium in Tinsukia district, Sarma referred to an alleged incident involving the refusal to accept a traditional gamosa at the President’s Republic Day “At Home” reception. Terming it an affront to the cultural identity of the region, he said such actions reflected the mindset of the Congress leadership towards the North East.
“The gamosa is not merely a ceremonial cloth; it symbolises honour, dignity and heritage. Any insult to it is an insult to the people of the North East,” the Chief Minister said. He added that unless Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shows respect for the culture and sentiments of the region, he should not expect political support from its people.
Women-centric welfare initiatives featured prominently at the event. Sarma highlighted the government’s focus on women-led development while distributing cheques under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA). He said 32 lakh women beneficiaries have been identified across Assam, with nearly eight lakh already receiving financial assistance. Digboi marked the 93rd phase of the scheme, under which over 17,000 women received support on Thursday.
The Chief Minister also said that nearly 1,000 women from the Digboi constituency have benefited under the Lakhpati Baideo scheme, aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods. Highlighting development works in the area, Sarma credited BJP MLA Suren Phukan’s tenure for improvements across sectors, attributing the progress to focused governance and effective implementation of welfare schemes.
Reiterating the party’s commitments ahead of the Assembly polls, Sarma announced that free Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities would continue for eligible beneficiaries if the BJP returns to power. On speculation regarding the BJP’s candidate for Digboi, he said tickets would be allotted strictly on performance, public acceptance and organisational strength, signalling the party’s strategy for the forthcoming elections.
