Baksa: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Baksa today to meet those injured during violent clashes outside the Baksa District Jail last week. The Chief Minister handed over cheques of Rs 2 lakh each to the injured civilians, Dipak Medhi and Bidyut Kalita, to support their ongoing medical treatment.
The incident occurred on October 15, when five key accused in the mysterious death case of Assam’s music legend Zubeen Garg—Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandeepan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya—were brought to the jail under heavy police escort. Tensions escalated as enraged locals gathered outside the facility, pelting stones at police vehicles and confronting security personnel.
The clashes left at least 21 people injured, including 10 police personnel, several journalists, and civilians. Two critically injured civilians were shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), while victims with gunshot wounds were referred to AIIMS, Guwahati for advanced treatment. One police vehicle suffered significant damage during the unrest.
Authorities quickly intervened, using baton charges to disperse the mob and detain several protesters. An extensive security cordon was later established around the jail to prevent further incidents, ensuring the safe transfer of the accused into custody.
All five accused are now lodged in the high-security unit of Baksa District Jail under strict surveillance. The Chief Minister’s visit aimed both to provide relief to the injured and to reassure residents of the administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the district.
