Assam Congress Leader Debabrata Saikia Demands Multi-Party Oversight of SIT Probe into Zubeen Garg’s Death

Guwahati: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly and Congress leader, Debabrata Saikia, held a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan on Tuesday, raising concerns over the ongoing SIT-led investigation into the death of music icon Zubeen Garg. Saikia stated that both Garg’s family and the people of Assam remain dissatisfied with the current inquiry.

During the briefing, Saikia criticised recent statements by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which he said have intensified public suspicion regarding the impartiality of the investigation. “After the Chief Minister suggested that Zubeen’s death could have been a murder, many in the public have become even more suspicious. We had hoped for a CBI-led investigation to ensure transparency. Now, questions are arising as to why vigilance officers under CID are involved,” he said.

Highlighting perceived inconsistencies in the SIT’s handling of information, Saikia called for the formation of a multi-party committee within the Assam Legislative Assembly to oversee the investigation and restore public confidence.

He also reflected on Zubeen Garg’s activism, including his opposition to tree-cutting and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), stating that these aspects are now relevant in understanding the circumstances surrounding his death.

Addressing recent unrest, Saikia condemned the attack on Pratidin Time reporter Narayan Saikia in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar, attributing the tense environment to comments and actions by the state leadership.

Saikia concluded by emphasising the need for transparency, impartiality, and accountability to ensure justice for the late singer and cultural icon.
