Assam Congress Suspends Joint Secretary Shahnawaz Ahmed Over Alleged Indiscipline

Guwahati, Jan 7: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on January 6 suspended its joint secretary, Shahnawaz Ahmed, with immediate effect, citing alleged violations of party discipline and actions that reportedly harmed the party’s image. The decision comes as the Congress leadership seeks to assert organisational control amid evolving political challenges in the state.

According to an official suspension order issued by the APCC, the action was taken on the instructions of Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi. The order stated that Ahmed had been found guilty of “gross party indiscipline,” including conduct that allegedly tarnished the image of the Congress and fostered political discord among party workers. The suspension will remain in force until further notice.

The order was signed by APCC general secretary (organisation) Bipul Gogoi and circulated to senior leaders within the party. Copies were sent to AICC general secretary in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia, AICC secretaries overseeing Assam affairs, APCC working presidents, and all Congress MPs and MLAs from the state.

Party sources said the move reflects the leadership’s resolve to maintain internal discipline and cohesion as the organisation prepares for key political developments. Shahnawaz Ahmed did not issue any immediate response following the announcement of his suspension.
