Assam Day Celebrated in Nazira; Statue of Chaolung Sukapha Unveiled

Nazira: Assam Day was celebrated with great fervour in Nazira as the Tai Ahom Development Council, in collaboration with the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), unveiled a statue of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom and a revered architect of Assamese identity.

The programme began with a traditional Ban-Phi Puja, honouring Ahom cultural heritage. This was followed by the formal unveiling of Sukapha’s statue by Piyush Hazarika, Minister of Water Resources and Information & Public Relations, Government of Assam. A vibrant cultural procession from the statue site to the Nazira playground added colour to the celebration.

The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished guests, including Bimal Bora, Minister of Cultural Affairs, and Mayur Borgohain, Chairman of the Tai Ahom Development Council.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Bimal Bora described Chaolung Sukapha as “the creator and architect of the Assamese nation,” emphasising his role in uniting diverse communities and laying the foundation of a harmonious society.

In a gesture of respect and recognition, the Tai Ahom Development Council handed over a Rs 5 lakh cheque to the family of late artist Rajiv Shadya, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to Assam’s cultural heritage. The celebration highlighted pride, unity, and a deep sense of cultural reverence among the people of Nazira.
