The Assam Education Department has issued five directives to schools across the state covering campus security, sanitation, academic discipline and student safety following inspections conducted by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) under its ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign.
The campaign saw CJP members visit government schools to assess infrastructure and basic facilities. A team led by party co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka recently inspected schools in the Palashbari and Dispur areas and raised concerns over facilities at some institutions.
Under the latest instructions, schools have been told to keep their main gates locked before the morning prayer begins. They have also been directed to ensure that toilets remain clean and hygienic and that cleanliness is maintained throughout school premises.
The department has asked schools to prevent unauthorised entry into campuses and ensure that outsiders are allowed in only with prior permission. Appropriate security measures have also been emphasised.
Schools have further been instructed to maintain a proper academic environment within their campuses.
The department has also issued directions aimed at protecting students’ privacy and safety, including a prohibition on collecting photographs or videos of children without prior permission.
The instructions followed the CJP’s school campaign, through which the party said it sought to highlight gaps in government school infrastructure and basic facilities and press for improvements.
The inspections came days after Ranka and several CJP leaders and volunteers were detained by Assam Police in Guwahati ahead of a planned regional volunteers’ meeting. They were later released.
The Education Department’s directives cover school security, sanitation, campus access, academic environment and the privacy and safety of students.
