Assam Elections 2026: Nagaland Police Issues Advisory for Travellers Amid Tightened Border Checks

Kohima, March 20: Nagaland Police on March 19 issued a public advisory urging citizens travelling to Assam to remain vigilant as the Model Code of Conduct comes into force ahead of the Assam Legislative Assembly elections 2026 scheduled next month.

The advisory highlighted that surveillance and checking have been intensified at inter-state borders and other strategic locations to ensure the free, fair and transparent conduct of elections. Officials noted that several otherwise law-abiding citizens have faced inconvenience due to limited awareness of election-related restrictions.

To prevent legal issues during transit, travellers have been asked to strictly adhere to guidelines while crossing into Assam. Police cautioned against carrying large sums of cash without valid documentation, warning that such instances could result in detention or seizure during routine checks.

The advisory also stressed that transporting valuables such as gold or silver without proper proof may invite scrutiny or confiscation. Additionally, carrying political or campaign-related materials, including pamphlets and posters, without authorisation has been flagged as a violation that could lead to legal consequences.

Travellers have been advised to expect multiple vehicle checks and to cooperate with authorities by carrying valid identification and relevant supporting documents. Police reiterated that carrying arms and ammunition without a valid licence and prior permission remains strictly prohibited.

Nagaland shares a 512-kilometre boundary with Assam, spanning at least seven districts. Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4.
