Assam Emerges as India’s Fastest-Growing Major State Economy Over Five Years

Assam has been recognised as the fastest-growing major state economy in the country over the last five years, recording a 45 per cent growth in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), according to data acknowledged by the Reserve Bank of India.

Figures shared by Business Today, based on RBI data at constant prices, showed that Assam’s GSDP rose from ₹2.4 lakh crore in FY20 to ₹3.5 lakh crore in FY25, placing the state at the top of the list among major Indian states in terms of growth rate. The performance surpassed other large economies such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana over the same period.

Reacting to the development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to express pride in the achievement. “A proud moment for Assam. RBI has recognised our GSDP growth as the fastest in the country over the last 5 years at 45%. This is a testament to the hard work of our people. As I have consistently said, we will ensure that Assam emerges as one of the top 5 states of Bharat,” he wrote.

The data highlighted Assam’s rapid economic expansion compared to several larger states, underlining a significant shift in the state’s economic trajectory. The growth reflected sustained improvement in economic activity over the five-year period, positioning Assam as a leading performer among India’s major state economies.
