Assam Extends Chief Secretary Ravi Kota’s Tenure by Six Months Amid Election Preparations

The Assam government has granted a six-month extension to the tenure of Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, according to an official notification issued by the Personnel Department. The extension will take effect from May 1 and will continue until October 31, 2026.

Ravi Kota, a 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service officer, was due to retire on April 30. However, the state government decided to retain him in the top administrative post, citing administrative requirements. The notification confirming the extension was issued on Sunday and has taken immediate effect.

Kota took over as Assam’s Chief Secretary on April 1, 2024, and has since been responsible for overseeing key administrative functions and policy coordination within the state government.

The decision to extend his tenure comes at a sensitive juncture, as Assam is expected to head into Assembly elections in March–April this year, with polling scheduled across all 126 constituencies. Officials view continuity in the chief secretary’s office as important to ensure stable governance and effective coordination during the election period.

The extension order was issued by the Personnel Department, reinforcing the government’s intent to maintain administrative continuity during a crucial phase for the state.
