Guwahati, August 1: The death toll from the floods in Assam rose to 82 after two more people lost their lives, while the overall flood situation showed signs of improvement with the number of affected people declining to 1.92 lakh, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on July 31.
The latest fatalities were reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district and Sonari in Charaideo district. The ASDMA said no person was reported missing.
Floodwaters continued to affect five districts—Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat and Nagaon—covering 17 revenue circles and 379 villages.
According to the latest bulletin, 1,92,799 people remained affected across the state. Charaideo was the worst-hit district with 77,456 affected residents, followed by Sivasagar with 63,492 and Jorhat with 34,067.
The flood situation improved compared to the previous day, when more than two lakh people across eight districts were affected.
The ASDMA said 54 relief camps were sheltering 12,994 displaced people, while another 26 relief distribution centres were providing assistance to 5,384 people.
Relief and rescue operations continued with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies deployed in the affected areas.
The floods continued to impact agriculture, with nearly 15,430 hectares of cropland still submerged. The deluge also caused damage to houses, roads and other public infrastructure across the affected districts, the bulletin said.
