BJP MLA Manab Deka on Wednesday, July 22, said the Assam government had launched relief and rescue operations on a war footing as floods continued to affect several parts of the state, describing the situation in some regions as unprecedented.
Speaking about the prevailing flood situation, Deka said areas that generally remained unaffected by severe flooding had witnessed extensive inundation this time. He attributed the unusual rise in water levels in parts of Assam to a cloudburst in neighbouring Nagaland.
The legislator said that while floods were a recurring feature in Assam, the scale and pattern of the current flooding were unlike those witnessed in previous years. He added that the government had mobilised relief and rescue teams and was working to provide assistance to people affected by the disaster.
Deka said natural calamities could not be prevented but stressed that the state government was carrying out its responsibilities with urgency to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation.
He also said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was scheduled to visit the affected areas to assess the situation and review the ongoing relief measures.
The state government has intensified rescue, relief and restoration efforts as floodwaters continue to affect multiple districts, with authorities closely monitoring the situation.
