GUWAHATI, Oct 30: The Assam government has set up an eight-member committee to prepare rules for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, giving the panel one month to submit its draft, officials said.
According to a notification issued by the Political Department, Home and Political Department Secretary Deba Prasad Misra will chair the committee.
The panel comprises Finance Special Commissioner and Secretary Partha Pratim Majumdar, Legislative Secretary Geetanjali D Saikia, Welfare of Minorities and Development Secretary Farida Samsul, and Home and Political Additional Secretary Mridul Kr Das, among its members.
The move follows the Assam Assembly’s passage of the Assam Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, on May 27. The proposed legislation seeks to establish a common legal framework for marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships, regardless of religion.
The Bill has been sent to the Centre for the President’s assent, according to an order dated October 13 issued by Home and Political Department Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewari. The order was made available to the media on Thursday.
With the passage of the legislation, Assam became the third state in the country, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to approve a UCC Bill.
The proposed law seeks to prohibit polygamy and make the registration of live-in relationships mandatory. It also provides for imprisonment of up to seven years for bigamy or polygamy and up to three months for failure to register a live-in relationship.
Members of the Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam have been excluded from the proposed legislation’s purview.
