Assam Government Issues Strict Directives to Ensure Medicine Supply During Nationwide Chemists’ Strike

Guwahati, May 20: The Assam government has issued stringent instructions to maintain uninterrupted access to essential and life-saving medicines across the state amid a nationwide strike called by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists on May 20.

In a circular issued by the Office of the Drugs Controller, the state administration made it clear that disruptions in the availability of critical medicines would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The move follows concerns that the nationwide protest by chemists and druggists could affect healthcare services and public access to essential medication.

Referring to directions issued by the Drugs Controller General (India) after a review meeting held on May 17, the Assam government identified categories of medical outlets that are required to remain operational during normal business hours despite the strike call.

These include Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras, AMRIT pharmacies, medical stores functioning within government and private hospital campuses, generic medicine outlets, and pharmacies that are not members of the AIOCD or associated chapters of the Assam Drug Dealers Association.

The circular warned that pharmacies shutting operations in violation of the order could face action under provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Authorities stated that such violations would be treated as serious breaches of licensing conditions and could result in suspension or cancellation of licences.

To ensure implementation of the directive, Drug Inspectors across districts have been asked to coordinate with local chemist bodies and monitor the situation closely. Officials have also been instructed to ensure that adequate numbers of pharmacies continue functioning in every area, even if some establishments participate in the strike.

The administration has additionally directed district authorities and police to work in coordination to provide security for pharmacies that continue operations and prevent any form of coercion, obstruction or disruption during the strike period.

District administrations have also been asked to publicise lists of pharmacies remaining open and provide contact details of relevant officials to help residents access medicines during emergencies.

According to the government, these measures are intended to ensure uninterrupted healthcare access and prevent hardship for patients dependent on regular treatment and emergency pharmaceutical services.
