Assam Government Launches Judicial Probe into Zubeen Garg’s Death in Singapore

Guwahati: The Government of Assam has established a high-level, One-Man Inquiry Commission to thoroughly investigate the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025. The commission, constituted under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, has been formally notified (No. ECF-708361/4 dated 03/10/2025) and is headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia, a sitting Judge of the Gauhati High Court, signaling a commitment to a transparent and comprehensive judicial probe.

The scope of the investigation is broad and detailed, designed to leave no stone unturned in determining the precise nature of the tragedy. Key terms of reference for the commission include investigating the full facts and circumstances that led to Garg’s passing, establishing a complete sequence of events both immediately preceding and following the incident, and critically examining any potential lapses, acts of omission, commission, or negligence on the part of any individuals, authorities, or institutions involved. Crucially, the commission is also tasked with determining if any external factors, such as foul play, conspiracy, or other unlawful acts, contributed to or were linked with the singer’s death. The judicial body has been given a period of six months from the date of its notification to submit its final report.

To facilitate the evidence-gathering process, the commission has set up its office at the Assam Khadi & Village Industries Board on Maniram Dewan Road, Chandmari, Guwahati-781003. The secretary of the commission, Aroop Pathak, ACS, has issued a public notice inviting relevant information. Statements from individuals will be recorded between November 3 and November 21, 2025, excluding Sundays, during the hours of 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Those intending to submit evidence are required to do so via notarised affidavits, which must be accompanied by a list of supporting documents, including originals or true copies. Furthermore, participants must indicate the sources from which any additional necessary documents can be obtained.

Pathak has strongly urged for the widespread dissemination of this notice across leading state and national newspapers, All India Radio, Doordarshan, and various satellite channels. This extensive publicity campaign is intended to ensure that all parties with relevant information are aware of the procedure and can fully participate in the inquiry. This judicial move is widely anticipated to provide a structured and rigorous examination of Zubeen Garg’s death, ultimately aiming to ensure accountability and transparency by scrutinizing every aspect of the case under strict judicial supervision.
