Guwahati: The Assam government has announced that the Zubeen Garg case will be transferred to a fast-track court to ensure a swift and transparent trial, with a Special Public Prosecutor to be appointed to handle the proceedings exclusively.
Sources indicated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the singer’s mysterious death is in the final stages of investigation, with the chargesheet expected to be submitted anytime after November. The move underscores the government’s commitment to delivering prompt justice in the high-profile case that has gripped Assam and the wider Northeast.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused certain groups of exploiting the late singer’s death for political gains, following violent protests in Baksa district linked to Garg’s demise. Taking to X, Sarma wrote, “When Zubeen was alive, the entire ecosystem tried to defame and pull him down. Today, after his death, the same people worship him as a god. These are not real admirers – they are fake fans whose only motive is to use his name to attack and oppose BJP. True love and respect are shown when a person is alive, not when it becomes convenient after death.”
The remarks came after police resorted to tear gas and baton charges to disperse a mob that attacked a convoy transporting five accused in connection with Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, highlighting the charged public sentiment surrounding the case.
The fast-track court is expected to accelerate proceedings, ensuring that legal processes progress without unnecessary delays while maintaining transparency and adherence to due process.
