The Assam government has decided to withdraw all police cases registered in connection with protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination and initiate the release of those arrested, effectively bringing legal proceedings arising from the demonstrations to an end.
According to an official decision, five cases had been registered across the state as of 6 pm on July 26, 2026, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals in connection with the protests.
After reviewing the circumstances surrounding the demonstrations and considering the need to strengthen accountability and introduce systemic reforms in the examination and higher education system, the government resolved not to pursue further legal action against those who participated in the protests.
Under the decision, no adverse legal action will be initiated by any police authority in Assam against individuals involved in the demonstrations. The government has directed authorities to promptly begin the process of withdrawing all five cases, regardless of the stage of legal proceedings, in accordance with the law.
It also stated that the arrests and detentions made in connection with the cases will be reviewed, with the process of releasing the arrested individuals to be initiated on an expedited basis.
The state further clarified that it does not intend to initiate any additional adverse action against those involved in the protests. With the withdrawal of the cases and the release of those arrested, the government said the matter would be treated as closed, signalling a shift in focus towards broader reforms aimed at improving accountability and strengthening the examination and higher education framework.
