Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya today attended the flagging off ceremony of Indian Railways’ first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Malda Town in West Bengal. The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will operate between Howrah in West Bengal and Kamakhya in Assam. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Acharya termed the inauguration a moment of immense pride and joy. He said the launch of an ultra-modern sleeper train from the sacred land of Maa Kamakhya symbolises India’s progress rooted in its cultural and spiritual heritage. Describing the project as a reflection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Development as well as Heritage,” the Governor said the train stands as a symbol of modern India’s confidence and inclusive growth.

He noted that the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is an important step towards building a “Viksit Bharat,” ensuring balanced development across all regions. The train will cover the nearly 972-kilometre distance between Kamakhya and Kolkata in around 14 hours, offering passengers a safe, comfortable, and time-efficient journey. The service is expected to boost tourism, trade, education, and cultural exchange in Assam and the Northeast.
Highlighting Assam’s strategic importance as the gateway to the Northeast, the Governor stressed the need for strong rail connectivity. He also highlighted Indian Railways’ focus on safety through systems like Kavach and AI-based warning mechanisms.
Several dignitaries, including Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, and Members of Parliament, were present on the occasion.
