Barpeta: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Saturday led the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra in Barpeta, calling for collective efforts from all sections of society to combat drug abuse and protect the younger generation from substance addiction. The padayatra began at the Barpeta District Library and proceeded towards the District Commissioner’s Office. Barpeta MLA Dipak Kumar Das, District Commissioner Nabadeep Pathak, Senior Superintendent of Police Sushanta Biswa Sarma, senior officials, NCC cadets, youth representatives and local residents participated in the march. Addressing a public gathering at the District Library, Governor Acharya stressed that protecting the youth from addiction was essential for the country’s development and the vision of a Viksit Bharat. He urged families, educational institutions, civil society organisations and government agencies to work together to create a drug-free society.

District Commissioner Nabadeep Pathak thanked the Governor for leading the campaign in Barpeta, while SSP Sushanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the role of the police and administration in implementing the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. He also called upon citizens to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies in tackling drug-related activities. During the programme, eight individuals were felicitated for their contributions to the fight against drug abuse. The awardees included ASHA and Anganwadi workers, Assam Police personnel and other frontline personnel involved in the anti-drug campaign.
The Governor later paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue near the District Commissioner’s Office, marking the conclusion of the programme. Barpeta Sattra Burha Satriya Babul Chandra Das, social worker Gunindra Nath Das, senior officials and other citizens were also present. The Barpeta programme formed part of Governor Acharya’s wider statewide campaign to mobilise communities, particularly young people, against substance abuse.
