Guwahati: In a major boost to higher education in the Barak Valley, the Assam government has allotted 1.5 acres of land to Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) for setting up a permanent Regional Centre in Silchar.
According to an official statement, the development marks the successful culmination of efforts by KKHSOU leadership. On August 13, 2025, Vice Chancellor Rajendra Prasad Das and Dean, Study Centre (i/c) Pranab Saikia met Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav seeking government land for the project. Yadav assured full support and later fulfilled the commitment through Memo No. E-162506/496593-A, dated 28 November 2025.

The allotted land, measuring roughly one Bigha or 1.5 acres, falls under 2nd R.S. Govt. Khas Dag No. 666 of Mouza Srikona Part-I, Porgana Rajnagar.
Expressing gratitude, Vice Chancellor Das thanked the state government and DC Yadav for their timely intervention in strengthening higher education in the geographically challenging region. He noted that KKHSOU currently runs 23 study centres across the three districts of Barak Valley, serving over ten thousand learners enrolled in various academic programmes.
Das said the proposed Regional Centre will enhance real-time academic support, improve learner services, and uplift the overall educational delivery system. He further highlighted the University’s commitment to expanding access to quality education, adding that KKHSOU has also launched an MA in Bengali programme from the July 2025 session to meet a long-standing demand of the region’s people.
