Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a 20 per cent bonus for workers employed at tea gardens under the Assam Tea Corporation, offering much-needed financial relief ahead of the Durga Puja festivities.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed the decision after a cabinet meeting on Sunday, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting the state’s tea industry workforce. Tea garden workers, who form a vital backbone of Assam’s economy, have long demanded better wages and working conditions. The festive bonus is expected to bring cheer to thousands of families across the state.

Among other major decisions, the cabinet approved the establishment of Assam’s 10th police battalion at Sonapur near Guwahati, with an investment of ₹260 crore. The new battalion, officials said, would significantly strengthen the state’s security infrastructure and enhance its ability to tackle emerging law-and-order challenges in the Northeast.
The government also transferred the management of Guwahati’s 5,000-seat Jyoti Bishnu Auditorium to the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society, entrusting the cultural body with operations of the venue dedicated to promoting Assamese heritage and the arts.

In addition, benefits for 65 Science and Mathematics Facilitators working under the Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council were enhanced. The cabinet cleared improved remuneration packages, better leave entitlements, and an annual appraisal system aimed at recognising and rewarding performance.
Taken together, the announcements highlight the Sarma-led government’s focus on balancing economic relief for workers, cultural promotion, and security reinforcement ahead of the festive season.
