Assam Launches Cashless Medical Scheme for Government Employees and Pensioners

Guwahati: In a major healthcare reform, the Assam government has introduced a cashless medical treatment facility for state employees, pensioners, and their dependents under its flagship Ayushman Asom Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana (AA-MMLSAY).

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched the new facility on Tuesday, enabling beneficiaries to avail of cashless medical care in empanelled hospitals across Assam as well as leading corporate hospitals nationwide.

Previously, the scheme functioned solely on a reimbursement basis since its inception in 2023. “Now, employees and pensioners can receive treatment without worrying about arranging funds. To ensure a smooth transition, the reimbursement system will continue alongside the new cashless facility,” the Chief Minister said.

According to official data, 2,23,826 employees and 6,172 pensioners have already registered under the scheme. The government has reimbursed Rs 65 crore since the launch of the initiative — a significant rise compared to the earlier annual expenditure of around Rs 17–18 crore, reflecting its expanding coverage and efficiency.

Sarma highlighted that unlike the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana, which is centrally funded, the Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana is self-sustaining, financed through employee contributions. He estimated that the scheme could eventually benefit 7–8 lakh individuals across the state.

The Chief Minister also announced that the government would soon constitute a new Pay Commission, ensuring that Assam’s employees receive timely pay and benefit revisions in line with their central counterparts.
