A 29-year-old man was arrested in Cachar district on September 28 following a complaint over allegedly defamatory and communally provocative social media posts, police said.
The accused, identified as Kalparnab Gupta, describes himself on Facebook as a research scholar at IIT-Bombay and chief convenor of the Barak Union for Civil Liberties.
Gupta was taken into custody after a Bajrang Dal activist approached Silchar police station with allegations that he had posted content targeting the Bajrang Dal, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Hindu religion.
The complaint alleged that Gupta had sought to associate Bajrang Dal members with extortion activities and a recent gang-rape case in Cachar district. It also accused him of making remarks about Lord Ram and other Hindu deities and mocking religious symbols and practices, including ‘sakha-sindoor’.
According to the complaint, Gupta had also advocated beef consumption in a manner that the complainant alleged was intended to offend religious sentiments and contribute to communal disharmony.
Police said the accused was booked under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections dealing with promoting enmity, public mischief and defamation. Provisions of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act were also invoked.
The investigation is underway, with police examining digital evidence and questioning the accused, officials said.
