Assam Plans 800-km Rural Road Expansion Under Rs 10,000-Crore Asom Mala 4.0

Guwahati: The Assam government is set to expand its road infrastructure network through Asom Mala 4.0, a proposed Rs 10,000-crore initiative aimed at strengthening connectivity across rural and less-connected parts of the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the initiative, stating that the government intends to take road connectivity to every corner of Assam and bring rural communities closer to the state’s wider economic growth. Under Asom Mala 4.0, around 800 km of roads are planned to be developed, with emphasis on improving connectivity in rural areas and strengthening last-mile links. The project is expected to build on the road development undertaken under earlier phases of the Asom Mala programme.

The new phase is expected to provide better road links between villages and major economic, administrative and commercial centres. Improved connectivity is likely to facilitate the movement of people and agricultural and other goods, while providing rural communities with easier access to markets and essential public services. The initiative is also part of the state government’s broader infrastructure-led development strategy, under which better connectivity is being prioritised to support investment, trade, tourism and economic activity.

Earlier, the Assam government had outlined Asom Mala 4.0 as a five-year programme involving the construction of approximately 800 km of high-quality roads at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore. The latest expansion is expected to further strengthen Assam’s road network and integrate remote and rural areas with emerging economic hubs, potentially giving a fresh push to development beyond the state’s major urban centres. The Rs 10,000-crore programme is therefore poised to become a major component of Assam’s next phase of infrastructure development, with rural connectivity at its core.
