Guwahati, Jan 6: Assam Police have dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking in the state with the arrest of five suspected peddlers and the seizure of heroin valued at Rs 2 crore in Cachar district. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed the development on January 5, highlighting the success of a targeted police operation.
According to the Chief Minister, the crackdown was carried out by Cachar Police at the Sunabarighat Bypass, where two vehicles were intercepted during routine checking. A thorough search of the vehicles led to the recovery of 406 grams of heroin, following which five individuals involved in the trafficking were taken into custody.
Sharing details on social media platform X, Sarma praised the police team for the swift and effective action. He reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug networks, asserting that Assam is determined to block narcotics routes and dismantle organised trafficking operations. “Drug routes in Assam don’t lead far, they end here,” the Chief Minister remarked while lauding the efforts of the police.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to trace the origin of the seized narcotics and identify its intended destination, as well as to uncover any larger network linked to the accused. The seizure adds to a series of recent enforcement actions as Assam intensifies its campaign against drug smuggling and substance abuse.
