Guwahati, Jan 10: Assam Police have dealt a major blow to the narcotics trade in Cachar district with the seizure of a large consignment of morphine valued at more than Rs 8 crore in the illegal market and the arrest of three individuals linked to the operation. The development was confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 10.
According to official sources, the seizure followed a targeted operation carried out by Cachar police after receiving specific intelligence inputs. During the raid, police recovered 1.357 kilograms of morphine, a narcotic substance derived from opium that is legally used for medical pain management but strictly prohibited outside authorised channels. The recovered consignment is estimated to be worth around Rs 8.2 crore in the illicit drug market.
The Chief Minister, while sharing details of the operation on social media platform X, lauded the Cachar police for their swift and effective action against drug traffickers. He reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics, stating that Assam will not allow drugs to circulate freely and that such illegal activities will be met with firm enforcement.
Police officials said all three accused have been taken into custody and legal proceedings have been initiated against them under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigators are now working to trace the origin of the seized morphine and identify the wider network involved in its trafficking.
The seizure adds to a series of recent crackdowns on drug smuggling in Assam, underscoring the state’s intensified efforts to curb the narcotics trade and dismantle organised trafficking networks operating across the region.
