Assam Police on Monday carried out a major anti-narcotics operation in Cachar district, recovering a huge consignment of Yaba tablets estimated to be worth around Rs 26 crore, officials said. The seizure marks one of the biggest drug hauls in the district in recent months and highlights the continuing challenge posed by organised drug trafficking networks in the region.
The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs, after which a police team intercepted a truck in the Rongpur area under the jurisdiction of Silchar police station. A detailed search of the vehicle led to the recovery of approximately 90,000 Yaba tablets that had been hidden inside a specially designed concealed chamber, indicating a high level of planning and sophistication by the traffickers.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said two persons were arrested in connection with the seizure. The accused have been identified as Dalim Uddin Laskar and Abed Sultan Barbhuiya, both residents of areas falling under Dholai police station. The truck involved in the operation, bearing registration number AS-01FC-0018, was reportedly travelling from a neighbouring state towards Guwahati when it was intercepted.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law and initiated further investigation to trace the source of the narcotics as well as the intended destination and distribution network. “Efforts are ongoing to identify and dismantle the larger network linked to this consignment,” SSP Das said.
The latest seizure comes close on the heels of another significant operation earlier this month. On December 5, Cachar district police recovered around 10,000 Yaba tablets valued at nearly Rs 3 crore from the Berenga Part-III area in Silchar, leading to the arrest of a 23-year-old accused, Nazmul Haq Mazumdar. Authorities said the back-to-back recoveries underline their intensified crackdown on drug trafficking across southern Assam.
