A head constable of the 24th Assam Police Battalion (APBn) was found dead after allegedly dying by suicide at the Darangamela Police Outpost in Assam’s Tamulpur district late on the night of July 3, officials said.
The deceased was identified as 51-year-old Ghanakanta Malakar, who was attached to Platoon No. 3 of the 24th APBn. According to reports, the incident took place at around 11:40 pm when he allegedly used his service 9 mm carbine to shoot himself in the head inside the bathroom of the police outpost.
Sources said Malakar had resumed duty only a few days earlier after returning from leave spent at his home.
Following the incident, police sent the body for post-mortem examination and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
The motive behind the alleged suicide has not yet been established. Malakar was a resident of Bargunari village in Pathsala, located in Assam’s Bajali district.
