Tinsukia, Dec 28: Assam Police have dealt a major blow to drug trafficking with the seizure of 19 kilogrammes of opium, valued at approximately ₹1.2 crore, in Karbi Anglong district.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the seizure on social media, issuing a strong warning to drug traffickers and reiterating the state government’s zero-tolerance approach under the Assam Against Drugs अभियान.
“Whether you’re Karbi Anglong’s ‘Heisenbergs’ with 19 kg of opium worth ₹1.2 crore or hauling 40 cartons of suspected Burmese Win cigarettes, Assam Police will find you and catch you,” Sarma said, referring to the fictional drug kingpin from the television series Breaking Bad.
“No respite for drug dealers, as our fight continues relentless,” he added.
Officials said the haul is among the larger opium seizures recorded in recent months and reflects intensified enforcement operations aimed at dismantling drug supply networks operating across the state.
In a separate operation, police in Tinsukia district arrested two suspected drug suppliers on Friday evening, December 26, during a raid at Bidya Nagar in Ledo. The operation was led by Roshan Thapa, in-charge of the Ledo Police Outpost.
The accused have been identified as Monchu Haisa and Azi Mamai. During the search, police recovered seven packets of suspected banned substances concealed inside soap containers. The raid was carried out based on intelligence inputs, with assistance from local residents.
Both suspects are currently being interrogated to trace the wider supply network, and further legal action will be taken under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police said.
