Guwahati, Aug 3: Assam Police seized narcotics valued at nearly Rs 12.5 crore and arrested three suspected drug traffickers during a major anti-drug operation in Kamrup district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on August 2.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) and Kamrup Police after receiving specific intelligence about the movement of a drug consignment. Acting on the inputs, the teams intercepted the consignment at Amingaon and recovered 50,000 Yaba tablets along with 67.5 grams of heroin.
Sharing details of the operation on X, Sarma described it as a major success in the state’s campaign against narcotics. He said the joint operation resulted in the recovery of drugs worth approximately Rs 12.5 crore and the arrest of three suspected traffickers.
The chief minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to intensifying its crackdown on drug trafficking and said the fight against the narcotics trade would continue with full determination.
Yaba is a tablet containing a combination of methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant, and caffeine. The drug, whose name translates to “crazy medicine” in Thai, is widely trafficked across parts of South and Southeast Asia.
