Assam Police arrested an alleged drug trafficker during a late-night anti-narcotics operation in Jogighopa of Bongaigaon district and seized 10,000 Yaba tablets with an estimated market value of more than Rs 3 crore, officials said.
The accused, Mofidul Islam, a resident of Koreya Pahar village, was apprehended near the FCI market area by personnel of Jogighopa Police. Following his arrest, officers searched his residence in Koreya Pahar village, where they recovered the large consignment of Yaba tablets.
Bongaigaon Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said the seized narcotics are estimated to be worth around Rs 3 crore in the illegal market.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the accused had allegedly been running a drug trafficking network from his residence for a considerable period while evading law enforcement agencies.
During the operation, officers also seized a luxury vehicle and a motorcycle believed to belong to the accused.
Police said Mofidul Islam is a repeat offender with multiple narcotics-related cases against him. Records show that he has previously been sent to jail three times in connection with drug offences, while his wife has also served jail terms twice in separate narcotics cases.
A case has been registered, and the accused has been taken into custody. Investigators are now working to trace the source of the seized Yaba tablets and identify others suspected to be part of the alleged drug trafficking network.
