Assam Polls 2026: 27 Candidates File Nominations in Tinsukia, Setting Up Multi-Cornered Contests

Guwahati, March 24: The nomination process for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections concluded with a surge of last-day filings in the Tinsukia election district, where 27 candidates entered the fray across six constituencies on March 23, signalling an intense electoral battle in Upper Assam.

According to election officials, nominees from major political parties—including the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Asom Jatiya Parishad, All India Trinamool Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Raijor Dal—along with several Independent candidates submitted their papers on the final day, adding to the competitive landscape.

In the 81 No. Sadiya constituency, Asom Jatiya Parishad candidate Jagadish Bhuyan filed his nomination alongside Independent contenders Lalit Deori, Abraham Tirkey and Dilip Borgohain, pointing to a closely contested race.

The 82 No. Doomdooma seat is shaping up for a direct contest between BJP’s Rupesh Gowala and Congress candidate Durga Bhumij, both of whom filed their papers on the final day.

In Margherita (83), Raijor Dal candidate Rahul Chettri and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha nominee Jarnel Minz formally joined the contest, adding new dimensions to the electoral dynamics in the region.

Digboi (84) is set for a multi-cornered fight, with BJP candidate Suren Phukan, Independent candidate Lakheswar Moran, Raijor Dal-backed Independent Dulal Moran, Trinamool Congress nominee Jiten Nag and JMM’s Bharat Nayak entering the race.

A similar trend was seen in Makum (85), where BJP’s Sanjay Kishan and Congress candidate Shibnath Chetia are joined by TMC’s Dilip Moran, JMM’s Munna Karmakar and Independent candidates Padmakanta Chutia and Lakhya Jyoti Rajkhowa.

The highest number of nominations was recorded in Tinsukia (86), where BJP candidate Pulak Gogoi and Congress nominee David Phukan are leading a crowded field that includes multiple Independent candidates and a representative from the Republican Party of India.

Election authorities have scheduled scrutiny of nomination papers for March 24, with March 26 set as the final date for withdrawal. Polling across these constituencies will be held on April 9, and counting of votes is slated for May 4.
