Guwahati, March 22: Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 21 said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance will formally launch its campaign for the Assembly elections in Assam with a 40-km roadshow in the Bhawanipur-Sorbhog constituency on March 24, a day after the deadline for filing nominations.
Addressing the media, Sarma said the alliance plans to begin its campaign from March 24, with regular election meetings scheduled to commence from March 26. He noted that the roadshow in Bhawanipur-Sorbhog would span approximately 40 kilometres.
He also addressed confusion over seat allocation in Chamaria, clarifying that it had initially been allotted to both the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad. Sarma said the issue has now been resolved, with the BJP deciding not to field a candidate in Chamaria and instead contest from Dalgaon.
In a separate development in Guwahati, the Chief Minister met AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, who has not been fielded in the upcoming elections due to alliance adjustments. Sarma said the decision was part of seat-sharing compulsions and acknowledged that such changes can lead to dissatisfaction among party workers.
He added that efforts would be made to engage with workers and address their concerns, assuring that their interests would be protected.
Assam will go to the polls on April 9 for all 126 Assembly constituencies, with counting scheduled for May 4, as the NDA seeks a third consecutive term in the state.
