Assam Records 81% Drop in Cybercrime, Sets New Benchmark in Digital Security

Assam has achieved a major breakthrough in cyber security, recording an unprecedented 81.2% drop in cybercrime cases over the past two years — a success hailed by officials as a “digital reset” in the state’s fight against online fraud and cyber offences.

Official data shows that cybercrime cases in Assam fell sharply from 4,846 in 2021 to just 909 in 2023, marking one of the steepest declines seen in any Indian state in recent years. The achievement reflects the impact of sustained operations, strategic reforms, and awareness campaigns spearheaded by the Assam Police Cyber Crime Wing and its district-level units.

Authorities attribute the success to a multi-pronged approach that combined public digital literacy drives, rapid response mechanisms, and closer coordination between police, financial institutions, and cyber experts. The Cyber Forensic Lab in Guwahati also played a vital role by enabling real-time tracking, data recovery, and faster investigations, leading to timely arrests and stronger deterrence.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the achievement, noting that Assam’s cyber safety model demonstrates how “technology can be both a challenge and a shield.” He stressed that continuous public awareness will be key to maintaining the state’s digital safety momentum.

A senior police official added that the success reflects not only the government’s proactive strategy but also the growing cyber awareness among citizens. “We’re not just clicking links anymore — we’re clicking safe,” the official remarked, underlining the cultural shift in online behaviour.

With Assam effectively hitting “CTRL + ALT + DELETE” on cybercrime, the state has positioned itself as a leading example of preventive and citizen-driven digital governance in the Northeast and across India.
