Aizawl, Jan 3: The Assam Rifles have dealt a major blow to cross-border narcotics trafficking with the seizure of over 11 kg of methamphetamine tablets during a joint operation with the Mizoram Police in Saitual district, close to the Indo-Myanmar border. Officials said the recovered psychotropic substance carries an estimated value of ₹33.186 crore in the international market.
The operation was carried out in the Kaifang area based on specific intelligence inputs indicating the movement of narcotics traffickers. Security personnel noticed suspicious activity in the area and immediately launched a targeted search, which led to the recovery of 11.062 kg of methamphetamine tablets. A vehicle allegedly used for transporting the contraband was also seized.
One individual, identified as Hasan Ali from Badarpur district in Assam, was apprehended in connection with the seizure. The recovered drugs, along with the vehicle and the accused, have been handed over to the Saitual police for further investigation and initiation of legal proceedings.
In a separate but related enforcement action last month, the Assam Rifles, working alongside the Cachar Police, intercepted a large consignment of illegal cigarettes in Silchar’s Tarapur area. A total of 3,060 packets of smuggled cigarettes, valued at approximately ₹1.83 crore, were recovered during the operation. Two persons — Hanannan Husain Bhuiyan of Islamabad in Cachar and Islamuddin Laskar of Bagha in Cachar — were arrested, and a vehicle was seized.
Officials said all seized items and arrested individuals in the cigarette smuggling case were also handed over to the Cachar Police for further legal action.
According to an official statement, the recent operations underline the Assam Rifles’ continued resolve to crack down on smuggling networks and illegal trade along sensitive border corridors, reinforcing efforts to protect the region from the growing threat of narcotics and other contraband.
