Assam Rifles, DRI Seize Heroin Worth ₹3.2 Crore in Cachar; Two Held

GUWAHATI, Feb 12: In a major anti-narcotics operation, Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized heroin valued at approximately ₹3.2 crore in Assam’s Cachar district late on February 11.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of narcotics, the joint team intercepted a Bolero vehicle on National Highway 306. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of multiple consignments of heroin concealed inside.

Two individuals suspected of transporting the contraband were apprehended at the scene. Authorities also seized the vehicle used in the operation and a mobile phone recovered from one of the accused, which officials believe could provide vital leads in the investigation.

The operation followed focused surveillance and coordinated intelligence-sharing between the agencies. Officials said the interception highlights sustained efforts to curb drug trafficking through the Northeast, a region often targeted due to its proximity to porous borders and established smuggling routes.

The arrested individuals have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal proceedings. A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the broader network behind the trafficking attempt, with digital and communication records under scrutiny.

Officials stated that efforts are ongoing to trace and dismantle the larger syndicate linked to the consignment. Security agencies reiterated their commitment to intensifying coordinated anti-drug operations to disrupt narcotics flow and maintain peace and security in the region.
