Assam Rifles Launches Skill Initiative to Empower Ollo Women in Tirap

Tirap: In a step toward promoting self-reliance and inclusive development, the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles has introduced a skill-based livelihood initiative for women of the Ollo tribe under Operation Sadbhavana. The initiative aims to support economic empowerment in Lazu village, located in one of Arunachal Pradesh’s insurgency-affected regions.

As part of the program, sewing machines were distributed to women from the Ollo community on Sunday. The effort is intended to provide practical skills that can help women engage in tailoring and other small-scale cottage industries, enabling them to generate independent income and contribute to household financial stability. Officials noted that enhancing livelihood opportunities is key to fostering long-term social and economic progress in remote and vulnerable areas.

The Assam Rifles highlighted that the initiative aligns with its broader mission of peacebuilding and community trust. By supporting local women and encouraging skill development, the force aims to strengthen sustainable growth across Tirap district, which, along with Changlang and Longding, has been affected by insurgency and limited economic infrastructure.

The distribution event saw the presence of senior Assam Rifles personnel, local village chiefs, and officers from Lazu Police Station, reflecting a collaborative approach to community welfare. The Ollo tribe, native to the Lazu Circle, is known for its clan-based administrative structure rooted in hereditary chieftaincy and a cultural heritage marked by traditions such as distinctive facial tattoos. While the community continues to uphold its cultural identity, initiatives like this are viewed as significant steps toward expanding development opportunities.

Officials said that similar livelihood programs will continue to be explored to ensure long-term empowerment and to further strengthen bonds between security forces and local communities.
