Assam Signs MoU With BBSSL to Boost Seed Availability and Strengthen Cooperative Farming

Guwahati, Jan 13: The Assam State Cooperative Federation has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) to improve access to quality agricultural inputs and reinforce the cooperative ecosystem in the state, an official statement said. With this agreement, Assam has become the 14th state to formally partner with BBSSL.

The collaboration aims to create a structured, cooperative-driven system for the production, procurement and distribution of high-quality seeds across Assam. By strengthening the seed supply chain, the initiative seeks to enhance agricultural productivity while opening up new income opportunities for farmers and cooperative institutions.

According to the official release, the partnership will help farmers obtain certified and high-quality seeds at affordable rates, addressing the long-standing issue of seed shortages in the state. Coordinated planning, technical assistance and an organised distribution mechanism are expected to ensure the timely availability of improved planting material across Assam’s varied agro-climatic zones.

A major emphasis of the MoU is on empowering grassroots cooperatives and farmers by integrating them more closely into the agricultural value chain. The agreement also embodies the principle of “cooperation among cooperatives,” highlighting collaboration between national and state-level cooperative bodies to achieve shared developmental objectives and promote sustainable agricultural growth in Assam.
