Assam has intensified security measures ahead of Independence Day after ULFA(I) and NSCN/GPRN called for a boycott of August 15 celebrations across the Northeast.
The groups have appealed to people to stay away from Independence Day programmes in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. However, they have not announced a general strike this year, citing the flood situation in parts of Assam.
Following the boycott call, authorities have strengthened security at celebration venues, vital installations, public places and other sensitive locations. Police have stepped up patrolling and surveillance, while security forces are monitoring potential threats and inter-state borders to prevent any disruptive activity.
Security arrangements were reviewed earlier this week at a meeting jointly chaired by the Assam Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, with senior district officials participating through videoconference. The review covered anti-sabotage measures, intelligence-sharing, surveillance of vital installations, route sanitisation, checking procedures and round-the-clock monitoring of designated venues.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will hoist the national flag at Khanapara field in Guwahati, while ministers and senior officials will lead celebrations at different locations across the state.
A police official said security had been tightened across the state and expressed confidence that Independence Day celebrations would pass without incident. With no general strike announced, authorities are relying on enhanced surveillance and coordinated security arrangements to ensure the programmes proceed without disruption.
