Assam to Get Nearly Rs 50,000 Crore in Tax Devolution Under Union Budget 2026–27

Guwahati, Feb 3: Assam is poised to receive close to Rs 50,000 crore as its share of tax devolution in the 2026–27 financial year, reinforcing the Centre’s fiscal support to the state, according to an official statement issued by the Union Ministry of Finance after the presentation of the Union Budget. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Budget for 2026–27 in the Lok Sabha on Sunday.

The ministry said Assam has been allocated Rs 49,725 crore towards tax devolution for 2026–27, while grants-in-aid amounting to Rs 29,548 crore were provided in the previous financial year, 2025–26. The rising flow of central funds over successive Budgets, it noted, reflects a sustained effort to deepen the Centre–state development partnership and strengthen Assam’s growth trajectory.

According to the release, the latest Budget places renewed emphasis on cooperative federalism by bolstering capital investment support and ensuring predictable resource transfers through tax devolution, grants-in-aid and major welfare schemes. These measures are aimed at creating durable assets, accelerating economic activity and improving living standards across the state.

A key pillar of this support continues to be the Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure scheme, under which Assam receives 50-year interest-free loans for infrastructure projects, over and above Finance Commission recommendations. The ministry said that between 2020–21 and January 12, 2026, the state received Rs 17,104 crore under the scheme, facilitating large-scale infrastructure creation and long-term asset building.

The Centre also highlighted the reach of flagship welfare programmes in Assam. As of January 2026, more than 2.55 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened, significantly expanding financial inclusion. Social security coverage has grown with 58 lakh enrolments under the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, 1.45 crore under the PM Suraksha Bima Yojana and around two lakh subscribers under the Atal Pension Yojana.

Entrepreneurship and small businesses have been supported through the PM Mudra Yojana, under which cumulative loans of Rs 74,884 crore have been disbursed in the state. Progress has also been reported in basic amenities and infrastructure, with over 40 lakh rural households provided toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) and 57 lakh rural homes receiving tap water connections through the Jal Jeevan Mission.

In addition, more than 50 lakh LPG connections have been distributed under the PM Ujjwala Yojana, while 1.76 crore Ayushman cards have been generated to strengthen health coverage. Food security initiatives have benefited over 2.4 crore people under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, and income support has reached 19.3 lakh farmers through the PM-KISAN scheme.

The ministry said the scale and continuity of fiscal transfers, capital assistance and welfare interventions underscore the Union Budget’s focus on Assam’s inclusive and sustainable development, aligning the state’s progress with the national vision of Viksit Bharat.
