Assam to Get World-Class Museum to House Vrindavani Vastra in 2027

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and JSW Foundation Chairperson Sangita Jindal held a detailed discussion on Saturday regarding the construction of a state-of-the-art museum in Guwahati, where the 16th-century silk textile Vrindavani Vastra will be displayed.

Created under the guidance of Vaishnav saint Srimanta Sankardeva, the Vrindavani Vastra is currently housed at the British Museum in London. The museum has agreed to loan the priceless artifact to Assam in 2027 for an 18-month display.

Calling it a “historic step for Assam’s cultural heritage,” CM Sarma said the museum would be designed as per global standards, following the specifications of the British Museum. The initiative will be undertaken by the JSW Group as part of its CSR activities.

The British Museum has also agreed to develop a digital representation of the textile, which will be exhibited at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in February 2026 and made available online for global audiences.

The Vrindavani Vastra, depicting scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, was woven at the request of Koch king Nara Narayan and also includes verses written by Sankardeva. The nine-and-a-half metre-long textile, originally made up of 15 silk drapes later stitched together, was acquired by the British Museum in 1904 from Tibet.
