Assam to Inaugurate New World-Class Cricket Stadium in Umrangso on December 5

Assam is preparing to unveil a state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Umrangso, with Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma scheduled to inaugurate the facility on 5 December. The newly constructed stadium, located in the picturesque hill town of Dima Hasao, has been designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, similar to iconic cricket venues in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England.

The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) developed the project on 30 bighas of land allotted by North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa. The ACA had initially explored Haflong as a possible site, but constraints in securing suitable land led to the selection of Umrangso. The project, conceptualised four years ago, has now reached completion.

BCCI General Secretary Devajit Saikia, who inspected the stadium ahead of its inauguration, confirmed that the venue is equipped with seating capacity for 15,000 spectators and features five practice pitches. He said the BCCI and ACA plan to host domestic matches at the venue, aiming to establish it as a prominent cricketing hub in the region. Saikia added that the facility will provide young players from Dima Hasao with opportunities that were previously unavailable, as cricket activities in the district had been limited to a football ground in Haflong.

The project received key support from the Umrangso Sports Association, and the pavilion has been dedicated to Chingia Tularam Senapati in recognition of his contributions. The inauguration ceremony will take place at 2 pm on 5 December, with Chief Minister Sarma and CEM Debolal Garlosa expected to grace the occasion.

With this new stadium, Assam hopes to boost cricketing infrastructure in the hill district and nurture a new generation of players who can excel on the national stage.
