Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 10 inspected ongoing development works at Guwahati Science City in Sonapur and reviewed plans for the project’s next phase.
Spread across more than 150 bighas, the Science City is undergoing additional infrastructure and visitor-oriented works following its formal inauguration earlier this year. Sarma expressed hope that the entire project would be completed by March 2027.
The Chief Minister announced an additional Rs 100 crore in state funding for infrastructure and facilities at the science centre. The planned additions include a digital panorama, convention centre, musical fountain and parking facilities.
The project is being jointly implemented by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the Assam Department of Science and Technology. Sarma said the government aims to develop Guwahati Science City into one of the country’s finest science cities and urged people, particularly school and college students, to make use of the facility.
The state government is also considering a dedicated Assam State Transport Corporation bus service connecting Guwahati with Science City to make the facility more accessible to visitors.
Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika, Food and Public Distribution Minister Kaushik Rai and senior government officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the inspection.
Sarma also visited ‘Zubeen Khetra’ at Komarkuchi in Sonapur, where a memorial is being developed in honour of renowned Assamese singer and artiste Zubeen Garg.
He reviewed the ongoing construction work with officials of the Public Works Department and the project’s architect and directed them to complete the boundary wall of the memorial premises at the earliest. The completion of the boundary wall will allow subsequent works, including the proposed open-air theatre and landscaping, to proceed without delay.
