Guwahati, May 25: The proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill introduced in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday sparked political reactions, with Congress leaders questioning both the need for the legislation and the process through which it was introduced.
Jakir Hussain Sikdar alleged that the move formed part of the political agenda of the BJP and argued that political parties in Assam should have been consulted before the Bill was brought before the House.
“We already asked why it is needed. The parties of Assam should have been consulted, which was not done. UCC is a political agenda of the BJP. How will it benefit the Assamese public?” Sikdar said while speaking to the media.
He also criticised the recurring rise in fuel prices and alleged that the financial burden on the public continued to increase. He questioned the position taken by the state government on the issue.
Meanwhile, AK Rasheed Alam said the contents of the proposed legislation needed to be examined before any final assessment could be made regarding its impact.
“We will have to see what provisions it has, whether it is needed or not, and what its merits and demerits are. We can only know this after the proposals,” Alam said.
On the other hand, Biswajit Daimary expressed confidence that the legislation would receive approval during the ongoing Assembly session.
“It has been introduced, and it should be passed in this session itself. After this, it will be implemented in the state,” Daimary said.
The proposed UCC legislation has emerged as a major subject of political discussion in Assam, with parties expressing differing views over its objectives and likely impact.
