Silchar: Assam University, Silchar, is set to inaugurate a Mobile Planetarium on January 21 as part of its 33rd Foundation Day celebrations, marking a significant step towards strengthening science popularisation and astronomy outreach in the Barak Valley and adjoining regions.
The mobile planetarium has been installed on the rooftop of the Students’ Union and Sports Board office building through an initiative facilitated by the Assam University Alumni Association. Developed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), the portable planetarium, named Taromondal, is designed to bring immersive astronomy education closer to students and the wider community.

Housed within an inflatable dome, the planetarium is equipped with an advanced internal projection system capable of offering a realistic simulation of the night sky. The facility will allow viewers to observe celestial bodies, constellations and astronomical phenomena in a visually engaging and scientifically accurate manner.University authorities said the mobile planetarium would be used for academic programmes, workshops and outreach activities aimed at fostering scientific temper and curiosity among students, schoolchildren and the general public. The initiative is expected to enhance hands-on learning in astronomy and space science, while also serving as a valuable tool for science communication.The inauguration of Taromondal adds a new dimension to Assam University’s efforts to promote innovation, experiential learning and community engagement in science education.
