Assam Voter Turnout Hits Record 85.91% in 2026, Women Lead Participation Surge

Guwahati, April 10: Assam has recorded a historic shift in electoral participation, with the 2026 Assembly elections witnessing a record voter turnout of 85.91 per cent and a notable surge in female participation, according to data released by the Election Commission of India.

In a significant development, female voter turnout reached 86.50 per cent, surpassing male participation, which stood at 85.33 per cent. The figures reflect a continuing trend in the state, where women voters have steadily closed the gender gap and, in recent elections, moved ahead of their male counterparts.

The pattern had begun to emerge in earlier polls. In the 2021 Assembly elections, female turnout was recorded at 82.01 per cent, slightly higher than the 81.60 per cent among men. A similar trend was visible in 2016, when women marginally outpaced male voters, signalling a gradual but consistent rise in their electoral engagement.

Historically, however, the disparity was pronounced. During the 1960s and 1970s, male voter turnout in Assam significantly exceeded that of women. In the 1962 Lok Sabha elections, for instance, male turnout stood at 58.39 per cent, while female participation lagged at 42.05 per cent, reflecting the social and structural barriers that limited women’s involvement in the democratic process at the time.

The broader data also points to a steady rise in overall voter participation. From 47.54 per cent in the first general elections in 1951, turnout in Assam has shown consistent growth, crossing 70 per cent in the 1990s and exceeding 80 per cent in recent years.

Experts attribute this transformation to improved electoral infrastructure, increased voter awareness, and targeted initiatives aimed at encouraging women to participate in elections. The trend also reflects wider socio-political changes that have empowered women across the state.

The 2026 figures mark a key milestone in Assam’s democratic journey, underscoring not only higher voter engagement but also the emergence of a more inclusive electorate where women are playing an increasingly decisive role.
