Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has firmly dismissed comparisons between Assam and Nepal, asserting that the state will preserve its unique identity while expanding employment opportunities for its youth.
Addressing a massive appointment letter distribution ceremony on Saturday, where 1.5 lakh young people received government jobs, Sarma criticised those drawing parallels between Assam’s governance and Nepal’s political shifts. “Our Assam is not Nepal. Assam is Assam,” he declared, questioning whether Nepal’s political upheaval had produced tangible development or large-scale employment. “After the so-called revolution in Nepal, did a university like Takshashila arise there?” he asked.
The Chief Minister said that such large-scale job appointments would have been impossible if Assam had chosen a different political direction four years ago. He added that the government’s employment drive has enabled lakhs of young people to “fulfil their duties towards their parents” and contribute meaningfully to society.
Taking a firm stand against those calling for Nepal-style political change, Sarma stated, “As long as I live, I will never let Assam become another Nepal. You cannot make Assam into Nepal as long as Himanta Biswa Sarma is alive.”
Looking ahead, he announced plans toy double the scale of employment generation, promising, “Next time, we will give jobs to 3 lakh young men and women.”
Concluding his address, Sarma invoked Assam’s rich cultural heritage, saying, “Assam doesn’t look toward Nepal. Assam looks towards Kamakhya, towards Srimad Shankar Dev, towards Lachit Borphukan.”
The event marked one of the largest single-day job distribution drives in Assam’s history, reflecting the state government’s ongoing emphasis on employment-led growth and administrative reform.
